Resurrection & Judgment --Dan Lightfoot

Sunday AM 1456

This series on "Living in the Last Days" has dealt with some of the aspects of events concerning the end of time. We've not tried to deal with everything. If you have questions, write them down and hand them to me, I will group them and spend whatever time we need to in answering them.

Today we'll deal with resurrection and Judgment.

Rev. 20:11-15 -- (Following the 1,000 years & the loosing of Satan)

"Then I saw a great white throne & Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth & heaven fled away, & no place was found for them. 12 & I saw the dead, the great & the small, standing before the throne, & books were opened; & another book was opened, which is the book of life; & the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.

13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, & death & Hades gave up the dead which were in them; & they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14 Then death & Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire."

A Picture of the Judgment Scene

One thing that stands out in every judgment scene:

I. Everyone will be there!

A. Mt. 25:31-- "But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 "All the nations will be gathered before Him;"

B. 2 Cor. 5:10 -- "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad."

C. Rev. 20:12-- "The great & the small…"

1. Powerful & weak, educated & uneducated, believers & unbelievers

2. No absences--excused or otherwise…

3. Even death & Hades produce their dead for the occasion.

a. Remember that Hades means "the unseen". Same as "Sheol" in the O.T. The unseen realm of the dead.

b. Jesus referred to it by another name when He told the thief on the cross: "Today, you'll be with me in Paradise."

c. David spoke of Christ in Acts 2, 1,000 years before His death: "Thou wilt not abandon my soul to Hades, nor allow thy Holy One to undergo decay." & Peter applied it to Jesus.

d. Hades is the unseen state -- sometimes translate "grave"…

D. All will be there. All those who have ever lived or died! That means there will be a …

II. Resurrection before the Judgment.

A. One resurrection: Jn. 5:25-29-- "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26"For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. 28"Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

B. & notice what happens with God's people: Phil 3:21 -- "For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself."

C. ...note the results of that resurrection: I John 3:2-- "Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is.

1. God's people will be raised to be like Jesus.

D. In I Cor. 15 Paul explains. (Read)

1. I Cor. 15:20-26 -- we are raised at His coming,

a. & death is the last enemy to overcome.

b. 15:53-54-- this mortal becomes immortal, & death is swallowed up in victory!

2. But some asked: "What kind of body?" (v. 35)

a. His answer: 15:36-44 -- this body is just the seed.

b. When it comes forth it will be incorruptible, like Christ's!

III. We'll All Stand Before God

A. Rev. 20:12 -- great & small standing before the throne.

B. He's given us ample warning!

Acts 17:30-31 -- "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead."

1. Note that the Father has given judgment to Jesus! He came the first time to save. When He comes again, He will be the judge.

a. Rom. 2:16-- He speaks of " the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus."

b. God judges… thru Christ… the secrets of men!

C. Note two things about Jesus being the Judge.

1. There can be no excuses.

a. As God, He knows everything about us…

b. As man, He has experienced all our temptations & sufferings, & frailties…

c. We may be able to fool a lot of people here. But our Lord has never been fooled. Can you imagine standing before Him & making some excuse for not having become a Christian?

1] "I just had it too hard, Lord, it was tough!" "I had too much to do, Lord." "My family stood in my way."

2] -- Don't you remember, my brothers tho't I was an imposter, but I persevered to die on the cross for you.

3] -- The 12 deserted me. One denied me. One betrayed me….

4] -- My own people deserted God & crucified me…

5] -- I suffered grief… pain… lack of sleep… fatigue… stress.. humiliation… insults… physical beatings… lies told about me… -- & I persevered!

d. No one can offer an excuse to Jesus! He knows what it is like, yet He went all the way to the cross for you.

2. His standard of judgment will be the gospel… here and in…

a. Jn. 12:48-- "He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.

b. Do you read it? Believe it? Love it? Obey it?

c. Illustration: Man getting a bone marrow transplant. On the operating table. Nurse came in with bags of blood. Said, "This is your bone marrow."

1] Point: It had already been given.

2] But not yet applied.

d. This word tells you that Jesus' blood has already been shed to give you life.

e. But it must be applied: That happens when we have faith, repent, and are baptized into Christ.

f. Rom. 6:3-4-- Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

D. Aren't you glad it's Jesus? The One who loved you enough to die….? The one who has experienced all your temptations…? The one who has suffered all your sorrows… will be the judge!

1. & tho' we'll be there AT judgment, we'll not stand IN judgment…

a. I Tim. 4:6-8-- "For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; 8in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing."

b. Jn. 3:18-- "He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

c. Jn. 5:24-- "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life."

2. Judgment Day is not so much a day of judgment day as it is a day of sentencing.

a. Jn. 3:18 says we are judged already. The way we live and the Lord we serve determines our judgment. So, in a real sense you're your own judge.

b. Don't be like those in Acts 13:46 -- "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.

There's a great day coming! I hope it will be a great day for you...

We hope that by visiting this website, you have been blessed.
